Meet Kellie - our newest employee

We are very excited to introduce you our newest recruit - please meet Kellie Thomsen. Kellie is a Civil Engineer with a background in stormwater drainage design, hydrology and hydraulic modelling, water quality investigations, and erosion and sediment control. We caught up with Kellie to find out more about her and her career.

Kellie, tell us about your career so far?

I come from a water resources consulting background, and when I became a grad I was the only grad in the team, so I had to learn several skills pretty quickly to cater for the few seniors in my team, from stormwater drainage design, hydrology and hydraulic modelling to water quality investigations and my favourite - erosion and sediment control. Consulting was a fast pace, sink or swim environment, but it made me grow, not only as an engineer, but as a person as well. I’m very grateful for the consulting background because I was able to learn very quickly that my true passion out of all was erosion and sediment control.

What is your favourite part of your job? Why?

My favourite part about my job, and particularly now being at Topo, is knowing I’m doing my best every day in helping the environment thrive, and preventing sediment getting into our beautiful waterways, oceans and reefs. Knowing I’m helping our planet and wildlife get the best it deserves. - to me, that’s what gets me out of bed every day.

What is your favourite project you’ve worked on? Why is it your favourite?

I have not really been at Topo long enough to have a favourite, but I really enjoy being on site. I have not been on site much since starting my career and as a visual learner, to be able to see the control devices in the real world, to see what’s working and what isn’t, really helps me to understand the bigger picture of erosion and sediment control.

It’s only your fifth week working at Topo, but how are you coping working with 6 blokes so far?

Hahaha. I’ve survived so far in my career with having all men around me so I’m use to it. But they have to prepare for a girly touch to come to the office.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

When I’m not at work I’m either at Crossfit, walking along the beach or climbing up a mountain with my partner. We love to get away for the weekend camping as well and enjoy a bonfire, food and a beautiful sunsets with good friends. If we are not doing that, we really enjoy family time. Also is drinking coffee a hobby?
